Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are present at birth. They include abnormalities in the heart’s structure,
electrical system and other abnormalities that affect the function of the heart.

~ 1 in 110 babies is born with a CHD (Congenital Heart Defect).
~ CHD is the #1 birth defect in the United States with 1% of the population being afflicted, about 40,000 births
per year.
~ 25% of children born with a CHD and within their first year of life, they will need life-saving surgery or other
invasive procedures.
~ Little is known about what causes the 40 different types of congenital heart defects and there is no cure yet.
~ CHD is the leading cause birth-defect related illness and deaths yet is grossly underfunded.
~ CHD kills twice as many children each year in the United States than all childhood cancers combined,
however, annual funds raised for pediatric cancer research is 5X higher than that of CHD research.
~ Even with the lack of funding the death rate for congenital heart defects have been on the decline over the last
decade.
